Chapter 34

They exited the cool theater into the balmy dark streets of St. Augustine. It was late, and the only light came from the shops and restaurants which had closed or were in the process of shutting down for the night. Above the buildings of the historic district a mist from the bay hung heavy and still in the air.

Very few people were outside walking at this hour. The streets beneath their feet slowly released the heat from the day. “I don’t think there’s much open,” Meg observed.

Carly laughed. “You know one difference between the U.S. and Argentina?” she asked. “In the U.S., when you say you went out for the evening and stayed out late, you mean you were out until one a.m. But – in Argentina, when you say you went out for the evening and stayed out late, you mean you were out until four a.m.”

“Yes,” Meg argued, “but in Argentina, you have this lovely little custom of taking a nap during siesta.”

“True,” Carly conceded. “I sure miss those.” They turned the corner onto yet another dark street. “I know what,” she suggested. “Do you like to dance?”

Meg was skeptical. “I’m not much for the nightclub scene.”

“Oh – no, no,” Carly winked. “You’re in Florida now. Let me show you how we dance here.”

She turned and started in the opposite direction. Meg followed just behind her, watching her graceful walk, and taking a simple pleasure in the joyful mindset that Carly always seemed to default to. It was contagious.

A couple of blocks later, Meg could hear music pouring out of a small restaurant. As Carly grabbed her by the hand and led her through the door, Meg looked quickly to see if there was any indication of rainbow flags or stickers in the windows. Instead, all she saw were flags and stickers of Central and South American countries. And – once inside – she saw that all the couples gathered around tables, at the bar, and on the crowded dance floor were straight.

Meg sighed. She was not – absolutely not – going to dance with a man tonight. “I don’t know, Carly,” she protested. “This really isn’t my scene.”

Carly looked disappointed. “Oh, no – you just haven’t tried it.” She seemed to think Meg was talking about the dancing. “Come here – let me show you.” She wrapped her fingers around Meg’s and pulled her onto the floor. They weaved through men and women dancing the salsa, the rumba, and some other dances Carly didn’t recognize.

Surrounded by straight people, Meg stiffened. “No, I don’t think I want to…”

As politely as she could, Meg started to back off the dance floor, but Carly stepped toward her. Slipping her arm underneath Meg’s left arm, she placed her right hand behind her back. Then she took Meg’s right hand in her left and gently pulled Meg to her in a dance hold – until their bodies were almost, but not quite, touching. To Meghan, the space between them suddenly filled with heat.
